A Day in the Sun
October 7, 2006

Hey Misfits,

A Misfit foliage tour took place Saturday under a perfect blue sky and the promise of warm temperatures. We met at John Deere at 10 am and headed out on an all day drive. All the convertibles but one (you¹ll have to guess who that was) chose to start the day with the top in the up position. It was just above freezing when we left home but the sun was already starting to work.

Paul and Ann, driving the long white Chrysler 300 convertible led Carol, sporting a new white Toyota Camry Solara convertible that she'll soon be taking to Florida followed by Dave Alyson in his White Coronet, Ed Slone and his white Chevy Monte Carlo and Bob and Pat in their low-riding maroon and white O50 Mercury. Tom and Audrey took a place in line in the gray TR-6 and Bill chose his Little Red Corvette. Doug, without Ginny who was on a 3-day shopping binge of southern New England, drove the "Cool04" deep blue Corvette. Bob and Ellie had the bright red Corvette and our tail-gunner was Jim driving his 66 red Corvette sporting new tires mounted on chrome American Racing wheels he acquired from a bargaining adventure in Lake George.

Paul led us in a northwesterly direction that took us through Ludlow and out Rt. 100 and continued to Routes 155, 140, 133 and to Rt 30 into the backside of tourist-clogged Manchester to our destination of Bob's Diner going up Rt. 11 out of Manchester. Paul has a knack for finding newly paved roads that take advantage of both sides of the Green Mountains for mountainside terrain, elevation, views and foliage. After a leisurely meal of diner fare, we returned to the cars and most everyone that had convertibles now felt it was warm enough to put the tops down.

Jim left before we ate to get back home to do chores and Bob and Pat along with Dave Alyson and Carol left at the top of Bromley Mountain to return home. The remaining Misfits took Rt. 30 through Jamaica to the Townsend Dam. After a brief stop for a photo op, we continued toward Brattleboro and east to Rt. 9 into Keene to escort Doug home. Doug's microphone was keyed in the open position as he did his Karaoke King act, to the amusement of everyone tuned in, with his rendition of Blue Moon and a few rama lama ding dongs thrown in (see below).

As it turned out the best colors of the day were in Doug's back yard. Trees with bright yellow, brilliant orange and deep red stood around his house and throughout the Warren St. neighborhood. After everyone tried sitting in the drivers seat of Doug's 32 Ford Highboy that is waiting for the right customer to take away, we all left for the return trip north to Charlestown and Springfield.

After a full day of foliage touring and 185 miles of Vermont and New Hampshire roads, we all made it home at sunset.
